As we approach the winter season in Florida, the cooler temperatures and less humid conditions may have you forgetting all about your HVAC unit. However, even if you aren’t actively using your HVAC right now— you still need to take good care of it! Here are a few tips for how to properly maintain your HVAC unit this fall and winter:
- Don’t Close Your Vents
You may think closing your vents is a great way to keep your home warm during the winter. However, your HVAC unit or vents being closed can quickly lead to a buildup of air pressure and potentially damage your unit. Instead, keep your vents open and the airflow moving. If it gets too cold in your home, just increase the thermostat temperature a few degrees!
- Make Sure Your HVAC Unit Doesn’t Get Covered
For similar reasons that you don’t want to close your vents, you also don’t want to cover your unit itself. If your unit becomes covered with leaves during the fall, clean around your HVAC unit to ensure proper airflow. You’ll also want to make sure no sticks or other objects get stuck on or in your unit during high winds.
- Change Your HVAC Filter
As summer comes to a close and fall enters the scene, it’s a good time to change your air filter! Gilman Heating and Cooling has filters on hand for all models they sell and can also provide you with more information about how and when to install your filter!
