Air conditioning units freeze up when the evaporator coil inside your unit accumulates frost or ice. Here’s what causes your AC to freeze up and what to do to fix it:
- Low Levels of Refrigerant
If your AC unit is low on refrigerant, there will be less pressure in the system which can cause lower temperatures and freezing of your evaporator coil. Usually this happens because there is a leak in the line or there wasn’t enough refrigerant added during installation or servicing. If it’s a leak, you’ll need to replace the line but if it’s just a lack of sufficient refrigerant, you may just need to top it off. However, it’s better to call a professional HVAC company than try and do it on your own.
- Restricted Airflow
Without good airflow your evaporator coil can get too cold and freeze. This can be caused by dirty air filters, evaporator coils, or fan blades. Blocked vents and faulty blower fans can also cause this issue. Start by thoroughly cleaning your AC unit and making sure your vents aren’t blocked. If this isn’t the issue, it will likely require some troubleshooting from Gilman Cooling and Heating.
- Broken Parts
There are a variety of parts that can fail and cause your AC unit to freeze up. A few of those parts are compressors, expansion valves, and blower fans. If you’ve cleaned your unit, checked for blocked vents, and your AC unit is still freezing up, it’s time to call Gilman’s. Our experienced and well trained technicians can troubleshoot the cause of your issues, order new parts, and install them in no time!
